Lives ruined, families torn apart and staggering sums of money lost. But is this really an urgent problem, or just light entertainment?

You know the consequences of your action, we are told from a very young age. Stop blaming and learn to admit YOU messed up.

I have no sympathy for those of us that don’t have enough self discipline and common sense to know when enough is enough.

I wish I had have stopped sooner, before I lost the people closest to me, the loss of money is only a byproduct.

Non profit clubs are fine. They offer services to the community with gambling money. It's the publicans the politicians have gifted endless streams of cash to get their tax cuts so only the pollies and their publican mates get profits from the misery.

A lot of money comes from international visitors. And poker machines keep the clubs running. Alcohol is worse. People lose money and become a danger to society. If we are going to get rid of something, get rid of alcohol.

One aspect of problem gambling that's never discussed, is the strong link between problem gamblers and family violence.

This is all so very unfair . It is equivalent to the government injecting people , with drugs and then offering help to cure the addiction. The clubs are are all criminals. what if all criminals started paying some of their income to charities ?

True man, Gambling, smoking, imported low quality food and alcoholism. They cry about the cost of medicare but do nothing to reduce the root causes of all these health problems.

I do not nor does anyone near me have a problem with gambling but I do think Pokies are designed to separate people from their money first and foremost.

Problem is, the majority of people, who play the pokies or go the casino, enjoy themselves responsibly.
Those that do not are the minority. If they don't lose their money on the pokies they'll find other ways.

It's the same with those who abuse pain meds and other prescription drugs. This is not indicative of how the majority of people behave and, thus, we need to place these issues in their correct perspective and stop the sensationalism.

It is a problem for some, but it is not a major problem.

Have you people heard of personal responsibility? If you are stupid enough to keep putting money in these machines even though you know you will probably lose, that's your problem.

Is it not Jack Obvious. We all know that. The trouble is that these people are not small in number. And are then becoming a family problem and societal problem. And we all end up paying via a snowball effect. It leads to depression. Alcoholism. Medical problems. Violence. Crime. Just think jack.

It's like you start selling ecstasy in every shop and then tell people it's your problem if you get addicted. These clubs are hiding the addictions.

You visit the clubs with your family have a good time and good food. You put in 5 dollars into pokies and you think you have everything under control. but slowly the bets go up and soon you are addictedthe club managers are well aware of who comes to the club every day.

NSW was one of the first states in the world to have pokies in pubs and clubs. Australians from other states would cross borders to play.
